John shares his experience of living in Geneva, his tips for things to see and do in the area and how you can connect with the local ICAS community.
What is your role?
I'm now retired.
How long have you lived in Geneva?
Since July 2000.
Where were you before?
Jersey, Channel Islands.
Where did you train?
French & Cowan, Glasgow.
What made you decide to get involved and become an ICAS Ambassador, and what have been the biggest takeaways for you personally and professionally?
I was asked by the ICAS CEO at the time if I wanted to be involved and I agreed as I wanted to give back to Institute. It has enabled me to meet other members in region.
What was it about Geneva that made you want to come here?
Family reasons combined with great financial services opportunities. Being in the centre of Europe, Switzerland is a fantastic base to travel from within the country but also to neighbouring countries and further afield by plane, train or car. Above all things might look more expensive – but they work!
Which part of Geneva do you call home?
Geneva city
What’s the one thing you shouldn’t miss if visiting the area? (e.g. tourist attraction, cool area, best food, the outdoors).
The Old Town with the Cathedral and medieval buildings. Personally, I love walking along the lakeside which gives the feel of the sea most days with views of the Mont Blanc.
I’m new to the area, can you recommend somewhere for:
-
A business lunch - Café du Centre, Place du Mollard
-
An evening out- Restaurant Les Armures, Old Town,
Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Victoria Hall
-
A weekend getaway - Annecy in local France, Stresa on Italian lakes
Describe the local professional community in three words:
International and client focused
What are the best things about living in Geneva?
International experience with opportunities to travel, mountains and outdoor living – no midges!
And what are the biggest challenges?
Finding affordable accommodation.
What advice would you give to another CA considering an opportunity in Geneva?
Take the opportunity to learn French, though the majority of the population speak English.
How can I connect with you?
