What’s your day job?

Senior Manager, Strategic Initiatives at City of Vancouver.

How long have you lived in Vancouver?

6 years.

Where were you before?

Toronto for 2 years, and originally from Manchester, UK.

Where did you train?

Manchester UK with the wonderful EY Restructuring Team

What made you decide to get involved and become an ICAS Ambassador, and what have been the biggest takeaways for you personally and professionally?

When me and my partner landed in Toronto, the ICAS network was a great way to meet people and learn from more experienced professionals. I’ve gained more than a few friends through the ICAS network, so this is my way of making sure it continues for the future expats.

What was it about Vancouver that made you want to come here?

I was originally on a two-year secondment from the UK to Canada. But the outdoor activities, access to incredible beaches and the ocean, and the more relaxed vibe than the East Coast have kept me here.

Which part of Vancouver do you call home?

The West End – I walk/ bike/ transit everywhere. It’s a 15 min walk to the office, a 2 min walk to the beach, 10 min walk to Stanley Park, and only a 5 min cycle to my rowing club.

What’s the one thing you shouldn’t miss if visiting the area? (e.g tourist attraction, cool area, best food, the outdoors)

You have to get into the mountains, ocean or in a sea plane. For those a bit less adventurous, I would suggest the “Fly Over Canada” attraction – it’s a very cool experience where you get a taste of Canada in the heart of Downtown.

I’m new to the area, can you recommend somewhere for:

  • A business lunch – Nightingale in Downtown, there’s a good selection of Canadian food, and smaller plates so you can try a few different dishes.
  • An evening out – Drinks at Parallel 49 (one of Vancouver’s amazing microbreweries) followed by dinner at Pepino’s on the Drive- their pasta and Tiramisu are delicious
  • A weekend getaway – Tofino. You need a long weekend as it’s not the easiest to get to, but it’s a special place with rugged beauty, stunning beaches, unpredictable weather and incredible water sports.

Describe the local professional community in three words.

Kind. Supportive. Outdoor-lovers.

What are the best things about living and working in Vancouver?

I love being able to cycle or walk to almost any activity. RainCouver, as it is so appropriately named, means that Vancouverites really make the most of Spring and Summer. We’re often camping, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, literally insert any sport. It’s a very relaxed vibe over here.

And what are the biggest challenges?

It’s expensive, and we do have an affordable housing crisis. It can also be a challenge to make friends due to it being on the “sleepier” side of North American cities – joining a club is a great way to make friends.

What advice would you give to another CA considering an opportunity in Vancouver?

Absolutely do it. It’s a great place to live and an exciting place to work. We’re home to some interesting startups, established industries such as mining, forestry & retail, and local and provincial governments seeking to improve the lives of British Columbians.
