Michelle shares her experience of living and working in Sydney, her tips for things to do in the area and how you can connect with the local ICAS community.
What’s your day job?
I’m a Corporate Development Manager at Brighte Capital Pty Ltd.
How long have you lived in Sydney?
Just a little over two years
Where was home before Sydney?
I was working and living in Edinburgh.
Where did you train as a CA?
I trained with Johnston Carmichael Chartered Accountants in their Edinburgh Audit department.
What was it about Sydney that made you want to come here?
I was drawn to Sydney for several reasons that really aligned with my personal and professional aspirations. First and foremost, the weather here is incredible — sunny days and a warm climate are a welcome change! I was also excited about the bigger city opportunities for my career. Sydney is a hub for various industries, offering the chance to grow and advance in ways that were harder to find elsewhere.
Another major draw was the opportunity to explore and travel around Australia and this part of the world. With its stunning landscapes and diverse cultures, there's so much to discover. Plus, the fact that I can work within 15 minutes of multiple beautiful beaches is a major bonus.
On a more personal note, I found many similarities to Scotland, particularly Edinburgh, which made the transition feel easier and more rewarding. The blend of familiarity and new experiences has made my move to Sydney not just exciting but truly fulfilling.
Which part of Sydney do you call home?
Paddington, which is in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. It is known for its vibrant blend of heritage and modernity. With its picturesque Victorian terraces, bustling markets, fantastic array of restaurants, and trendy boutiques. Additionally, its proximity to the city centre makes it a popular spot for expats and combines the best of Sydney’s cultural scene with a laid-back vibe.
What’s the one thing I shouldn’t miss when visiting the area?
Not that I’m biased, but I would definitely recommend Paddington. While it may not be at the top of the tourist list, it provides a fascinating glimpse into Sydney's history and the rich cultural crossover in the area. The pubs and restaurants are second to none, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely Saturday afternoon after exploring the famous Paddington Markets.
I’m new to the area, can you recommend somewhere for...?
A business lunch – Barangaroo is a great business lunch spot and it’s on the water. A favourite of mine in the area is Tapavino which offers great Spanish tapas.
An evening out – Surry Hills and Newtown are both excellent areas for a night out. Sydney boasts an incredible selection of pubs — referred to as "hotels" here — which serve as vibrant gathering spots for everyone. They effortlessly transition from a relaxed family Sunday lunch to lively rooftop parties with DJs as the night goes on.
A weekend getaway – I highly recommend heading south to Berry. Just under two hours’ drive away, this charming town is perfect for a weekend escape. You can enjoy beautiful bushland walks and explore local wineries, all while being a short drive from Hyams Beach, known for having the world’s whitest sand. It’s the ideal spot to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the region.
Describe the local professional community in three words.
Diverse, dynamic, collaborative.
What are the best things about living and working in Sydney?
Living and working in Sydney offers a fantastic blend of professional opportunities and lifestyle perks. One of the best things is the vibrant and dynamic job market, with a diverse range of industries, companies and roles available. This creates ample opportunities for career growth and networking.
On the lifestyle side, Sydney boasts stunning natural beauty, from its iconic beaches to parks. The climate is generally mild, allowing for outdoor activities year-round. The city’s cultural scene is rich and varied, with excellent restaurant and bar options, events, and festivals that reflect its multicultural population. Overall, Sydney strikes a great balance between professional ambition and a fulfilling personal life, making it a truly enjoyable place to call home.
And what are the biggest challenges?
While living and working in Sydney has many advantages, there are also some significant challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is the high cost of living, particularly when it comes to housing. Rent and property prices can be steep, and can be difficult to find, especially for newcomers.
Additionally, the city's fast-paced lifestyle can occasionally be overwhelming, leaving limited time for relaxation. However, with a strong support network — both professionally and personally — these challenges become much more manageable.
What advice would you give to another CA considering an opportunity in Sydney?
My advice would be to embrace the vibrant professional community and be open to networking. Connect with local associations and attend industry events to build relationships, as these connections can lead to valuable opportunities.
Additionally, familiarise yourself with the differences of the Australian accounting and finance landscape, including local regulations and practices. This will help you adapt more quickly and demonstrate your expertise, especially to those working across audit and tax.
Finally, don’t forget to explore the city and its surroundings. Sydney offers a fantastic work-life balance, so make time to enjoy its beaches, parks, and cultural attractions. Embracing both your professional and personal life will enrich your experience in this beautiful city.
What made you decide to become an ICAS Ambassador?
I was eager to build a new social and professional network in this vibrant city. Joining the local ICAS committee felt like a natural step towards connecting with like-minded individuals who share similar goals and values.
And what have been the biggest takeaways for you, personally and professionally?
The experience has been incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally. I’ve had the opportunity to expand my professional network significantly, which has opened new career opportunities that I might not have encountered otherwise. Additionally, organising events with such a fantastic group of people has been a highlight. It’s not just about networking; it’s about having fun and creating memorable experiences together.
Overall, my biggest takeaways have been the importance of community in career development and the joy that comes from collaborating with passionate individuals. Being an ICAS Ambassador has truly enriched my life in Sydney.
