Start your volunteering journey - mentor with the ICAS Foundation
Discover how you can help the ICAS Foundation support more talented young people
The ICAS Foundation supports talented young people living in disadvantaged communities to study accounting and finance at a range of universities.
The Foundation’s mentoring programme is critical to helping these students make the best of their time at university, with our volunteer mentors sharing their experiences to provide encouragement and a sounding board for student queries.
We are currently looking for CAs who would like to mentor one of our new accounting and finance students starting university Autumn 2020 and are within reasonable travelling distance of any Scottish university, the University of Birmingham or Lancaster University.
During lockdown and while social distancing restrictions are in place, mentoring will take place by video call or telephone discussions, with monthly face to face meetings resuming once measures have been lifted and it is safe to do so.
The Foundation in numbers
Since 2013, the ICAS Foundation has:
- Supported around 200 academically talented young people at 14 universities.
- Awarded more than £1.4m in bursaries and grants.
- Engaged over 120 CAs volunteering as mentors to support its students.
Here’s what some of our current volunteers and students have said about the mentoring programme:
“As a mentor, the students you meet through the ICAS Foundation have tremendous ability and enthusiasm and are eager to hear about the world of business and finance. I can wholeheartedly recommend becoming a mentor.” John, ICAS Foundation mentor.
“My ICAS Foundation mentor answers all my questions and helps whenever possible, recommending resources and sharing her experience. She makes me feel at ease - having someone to contact when you are worried or just querying a topic is really helpful, I am so lucky to be part of the mentoring scheme.” Andrea, current ICAS Foundation student.
“The work carried out by the Foundation is fundamental in allowing students to achieve their aspirations with confidence and having the opportunity to build a wide and varied network. I feel that, as a CA, we all have the ability and duty to share our knowledge and experience to help others.” Emma, ICAS Foundation Mentor.
You can make a difference, and given the opportunity, Foundation students could well help shape the future of ICAS With a time commitment of only 1-2 hours per month, becoming a mentor could allow you to have a significant impact on a young person’s career aspirations.
