In this conversation, Laura reflects on how her mentor's invaluable support and guidance has shaped her early career.

What did you find of most value from the mentoring relationship?

The mentoring relationship I had was incredibly enriching, and I can confidently say that it provided me with invaluable support and guidance. My mentor was always there to offer advice, insight, expertise and industry knowledge. They also provided me with a different perspective on things, which was immensely helpful for both my personal and professional growth.

Overall, the mentoring relationship was a huge asset to me, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a supportive and knowledgeable mentor. Their guidance has helped me to become a better professional, and I will always be grateful for their mentorship.

How has the mentoring relationship benefitted your career?

As someone who is just starting out in my career, the mentoring relationship was incredibly beneficial for me. It gave me a sense of direction and purpose as I navigate through the challenges of my early professional years.

Through our conversations and discussions I was able to learn about different career paths and opportunities that I might not have considered otherwise. As someone who had already been in the industry for many years, my mentor was able to offer advice on how to navigate the nuances of my field, build a network and set achievable goals. They also helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses, giving me guidance on how to play to and work on them.

Having a mentor also gave me a sense of confidence. It was reassuring to know that I had someone experienced to turn to when I had questions or concerns, and it gave me the courage to take risks and pursue opportunities that I might have otherwise been too hesitant to pursue.

What would you say to other CAs who are unsure or haven't yet signed up for the mentoring platform?

I would highly recommend signing up for the mentoring platform. From my personal experience, I can confidently say that you won't regret it. The platform offers a unique opportunity to connect with experienced professionals who can offer guidance, support, and valuable insights into the industry.

What skills has your mentor been able to help you learn?

My mentor has been instrumental in helping me develop a variety of useful skills. I am very grateful to my mentor  for taking the time to go through the formulas and financial modelling components that are most relevant to their own role. Their coaching complemented the ICAS exams, providing me with a greater understanding of the skills I needed to develop.

Overall, my mentor has provided me with guidance, support, and constructive feedback that have helped me develop professionally and become a more effective leader. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had them as my mentor.
