Well Together inspiration from ICAS Member Shona Campbell CA
Well Together participant Shona Campbell CA shares her ideas, insights and inspiration for getting outdoors and staying active.
Introduce yourself:
I’m Shona Campbell CA. I live in Edinburgh and am a Partner and Licensed Insolvency Practitioner with MHA Henderson Loggie.
How do you like to get outdoors, keep fit and stay active?
I love to run and go to outdoor bootcamp-style group exercise classes.
Tell us about your favourite place to exercise.
A lap of Arthur’s Seat is perfect. Its just over 5k and I usually start running clockwise from Abbeyhill. It is a bit of a slog uphill, but then the hard work is over, breathing eases and there are fantastic views the rest of the way.
What inspires you to get outdoors, keep fit and stay active?
I like my food, so exercise helps keep that in check. I have found it hard in lockdown to get motivated, especially when unable to meet up with other people or take part in group exercise as I enjoy the social side. I often must force myself to put my trainers on, but I never regret it once I am out. Being active really lifts my mood and helps me sleep better.
How do you fit exercise around your work/family schedule?
If I don’t plan, it doesn’t happen. I often arrange to run with a friend or family member or between drop off and pick up of a child at an activity.
Has the way you exercise changed during COVID-19/lockdown?
It used to be that early morning exercise was rare for me, but I’ve been using the commute time to run or do an online kettlebell or HIIT class and am now more likely to exercise in the morning - which I can’t quite believe.
Do you have any fitness hints and tips to encourage and inspire others?
Setting realistic goals is important. Couch to 5k is a perfect example where a three-times per week commitment for eight weeks will get you running 30 minutes without stopping. It got me back running once when my fitness was very poor.
If lockdown wasn’t a thing, where in the world would you like to go for a run, wheel, walk, cycle or swim?
I love pounding the pavements, parks and paths of Edinburgh but am looking forward to getting out of the city and running some rural routes.
