Well Together inspiration from ICAS Member Graham Getty CA
Well Together participant Graham Getty CA shares his ideas, insights and inspiration for getting outdoors and staying active.
Introduce yourself:
I’m Graham Getty, a retired CA living in Amersham, Bucks.
How do you like to get outdoors, keep fit and stay active?
I like to keep fit by regular cycling (outdoors and indoors) as well as by gym work, yoga and pilates. A typical week would be two outdoor rides and three indoor rides, although this can be influenced by the weather with outdoor rides replaced by indoor rides if necessary.
Tell us about your favourite place to exercise.
The Chilterns – many miles of quietish country road and with plenty of hills to help further improve your fitness!
What inspires you to get outdoors, keep fit and stay active?
The desire to keep myself fit and challenging myself to become a better/faster cyclist.
How do you fit exercise around your work/family schedule?
Being retired, it is only a question of discussion with my wife.
Has the way you exercise changed during COVID-19/lockdown?
Yes. All outdoor cycling has been restricted to solo and local rides – this has meant doing a lot of loops. Exercise, I believe, becomes of even more importance and value during a lockdown and helps maintain not only physical, but also mental, fitness. Thankfully, it is still permitted to go outdoors to exercise.
Do you have any fitness hints and tips to encourage and inspire others?
Find what you enjoy doing and do it consistently. You can improve your fitness quicker by doing some shortish high-intensity sessions – this is particularly important when time is of the essence. Quality is more important than quantity.
If lockdown wasn’t a thing, where in the world would you like to go for a run, wheel, walk, cycle or swim?
Lanzarote. I have had several great cycling trips there. Great weather (although windy), quiet roads, respectful drivers, hills – what more could you want?
Which ICAS Strava Club are you a member of?
What’s your Strava profile ID should CAs in your area want to follow you?
