Well Together inspiration from ICAS Member Gavin MacKenzie CA
Well Together participant Gavin MacKenzie CA shares his ideas, insights and inspiration for getting outdoors and staying active.
Introduce yourself:
I’m Gavin MacKenzie CA and I live Inverness working as F.D. on the Meallmore Care Home Group.
How do you like to get outdoors, keep fit and stay active?
I enjoy skiing, hill-walking and cycling with a bit of running when I am short of time.
Tell us about your favourite place to exercise.
The mountains – walking or skiing.
What inspires you to get outdoors, keep fit and stay active?
The beautiful scenery, plus peace and quiet. Need to be fit to enjoy it fully.
How do you fit exercise around your work/family schedule?
With difficulty. I generally finish working and go straight to exercise, if I stop in between it doesn’t happen. In the summer I get up very early and head for a hill.
Has the way you exercise changed during COVID-19/lockdown?
Fortunately, I bought a turbo trainer for my garage in the January sales in 2020 and signed up for Zwift. That has allowed me to cycle in all weather and during lockdown. It is a bit addictive.
Do you have any fitness hints and tips to encourage and inspire others?
Set a target, sign up for an event, tell your friends and family, find someone to partner with you and encourage each other.
If lockdown wasn’t a thing, where in the world would you like to go for a run, wheel, walk, cycle or swim?
I'm booked to go to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks for September – and still optimistic!
