Newly qualified: Ellis Davidson Horne CA
In this quick Q&A, Ellis shares more about her role at ScottishPower, what she hopes to achieve over the next year and the key lessons from her CA training.
What attracted you to your current role?
I’d envisaged myself in a reporting role as I enjoyed preparing accounts during my studies. I wanted to be a part of a multinational as it would give me a chance to work in a fast-paced environment and offer potential travel opportunities. ScottishPower was hiring a newly qualified Reporting Accountant and the company ticked these boxes, so I applied. It’s owned by one of the world’s largest utility firms and is the first integrated energy company in the UK to generate 100% green electricity – sustainability being part of the company’s values particularly resonates with me.
Which part of your CA training has most helped you?
The financial reporting course at TPS level has helped massively. ICAS courses in general test my resilience and strengthened my problem-solving ability – all vital for a career in accounting.
What do you hope to achieve over the next year?
I’ve already learned so much in the year I’ve been here. I’m looking forward to getting more responsibility in our monthly and year-end reporting. I hope to strengthen my reviewing skills and I want to implement process improvements for the notes I prepare in the management accounts at year-end.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
One of my main shout-outs has to be the people I work with. Everyone is so friendly. We arrange team social events, so there is always something to look forward to. Work-life balance is embedded in the culture here, which is fantastic.
