Ethics is at the heart of everything ICAS does. In an era of fake news, ICAS’ motto, seek the truth, is arguably as important as ever. ICAS launched in 2015 The Power of One, an ethics campaign which encourages CAs to be ethical leaders who have the confidence to speak out and influence the culture of the organisation for which they work.
Following on from The Power of One publications, ICAS funded two research reports under the title Speak up? Listen up? Whistleblow?, to examine how CAs respond to ethical dilemmas and whether they feel equipped to speak up.
Earlier this year ICAS partnered with Protect to provide members with access to an independent, confidential helpline. This service offers free advice regarding whistleblowing and speaking up.
In this webinar, Catriona Paisey, author of Speak up? Listen up? Whistleblow?, takes us through the key findings and recommendations in the report. We also get an insight into the type of ethical dilemmas CAs have faced.
Paul Boyle talks about the important role Protect plays in making whistleblowing work for individuals, organisations and society.

About the speakers
Catriona Paisey CA
Catriona trained with KPMG in Aberdeen and then moved into academia. She is currently a Professor of Accounting at the University of Glasgow where she teaches and researches current issues in the accountancy profession and accounting ethics. Her latest research publications are on social mobility in the accountancy profession, CPD and the ethical dilemmas faced by ICAS Members.
The ethics research was funded by ICAS and published last autumn in two research reports called Speak up? Listen up? Whistleblow? A Survey of ICAS Members and Speak up? Listen up? Whistleblow? In Their Own Words – Insights into the Ethical Dilemmas of ICAS Members. We'll be hearing more about those during this webinar. Catriona is also a member of the ICAS Council and Ethics Board.
Paul Boyle OBE
Paul Boyle OBE is Chairman of the whistleblowing charity, Protect, and a Non-Executive Director of Mogo Holdings Ltd and of the Government Internal Audit Agency. He retired from Aviva plc, a global systemically important insurer, in 2017, having been Chief Internal Auditor since 2010 and a member of the Group Executive Committee. He was President of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (UK & Ireland) for 2016/7. He was Chief Executive of the Financial Reporting Council from 2004 – 2009, prior to which he was Chief Operating Officer of the Financial Services Authority. He also worked for WH Smith plc and Cadbury Schweppes plc in senior finance roles. He qualified as a CA in 1983.
