Introducing our new RPE competencies
Learn more about our new logbook competencies and how they map to the current process.
Through our Strategy 2030, we’re redefining learning at ICAS. As part of this, we’re simplifying the logbook and the processes around it.
From mid-August, we’re launching a new logbook that will make logging hours and viewing progress simpler for students.
The new logbook will be on Advantage, our new home for everything a student needs throughout their training. From its new, user-friendly portal students will be able to log their hours and see at a glance how they’re progressing and what needs attention.
39 core competencies
To help simplify the logbook process, we’ve also streamlined the competencies students are asked to demonstrate and log, down from 1200 to 39 core competencies. These have been carefully aligned with the specific technical skills students will need for their career as a CA, and those all-important enabling skills they’ll need as part of the future workforce.

Competency mapping (updated August 2023)
The competencies will be categorised under six new timelines:
- Ethics and integrity
- Communication
- Teamwork and leadership
- Personal effectiveness
- Problem solving and decision making
- Technical competence
Some of these competencies will be new and so students might not have recorded them in their current logbook.
However, it’s very likely they’ll already have encountered these situations and will be able to use past experience to record them in their new logbook (e.g. are you able to ‘ask for help and learn from others?’).
What happens next?
Students will learn more about the new competencies and the changes to the logbook in the CA Student newsletter in July.
In the meantime, they can continue logging their 450 hours of Relevant Practical Experience as normal.
And when the new logbook launches, we’ll ensure that you and your students are supported every step of the way with training videos, user guides and regular drop-in sessions.
